The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire was a deadly fire that occurred in New York City on March 25, 1911. It was the deadliest industrial disaster in the history of NYC and resulted in the deaths of 146 garment workers, most of which were young women. The reason there were so many casualties? All of the doors were locked from the outside, which was a common practice to prevent stealing and people leaving early. Young women were jumping from windows to their deaths because there was one faulty fire escape which broke during the fire, and no exits save for a single stairwell that became immediately unusable within three minutes. The fire was so tragic that it started the revolution to gain better working conditions for factory workers across the country. It sparked immediate pushes for drastic changes that would control how managers and companies treated their workers, and it forever changed the face of labor safety standards.
